Post-Secondary Education

The establishment of CAMET in 2004 represented the first time that departments responsible for post-secondary education had a formal structure to address common issues and to undertake regional initiatives in post-secondary education in a coordinated manner.

Since 2004, some of the most notable post-secondary education initiatives included a strategy to engage the federal government in infrastructure renewal, research on student retention and mobility and follow-up surveys on graduate studies.

Building on these successes, the 2009-2012 Strategic Direction in post-secondary education provides the impetus for ministers of education and training to expand their agenda to include post-secondary education enrolment, quality assurance and skilled trades.

Ministers responsible for post-secondary education are focusing their attention to initiatives designed to lead and improve the quality of the region’s post-secondary institutions driven by the following guiding principles:

  1. students will receive the best possible post-secondary education in their field of study and will be well prepared to enter the labour force; and
  2. departments and stakeholders will work together to respond to emerging issues affecting post-secondary education.

The guiding principles have led to target projects in these 4 key areas:

  • Enrollments in Post-Secondary Institutions
  • Quality Assurance – Post-Secondary Programs
  • Infrastructure and Recapitalization
  • Skilled Trades
